While off the beaten path, Pine Bar Recreation Site outside Cottonwood is a popular put-in spot for floating the Lower Salmon River, and a local go-to for both anglers and recreationists.

Visitors to this recreation destination – overseen by the Bureau of Land Management can day picnic, camp overnight, and both swim and raft from several large beaches.

One of the sites most recent improvements is a new 14-foot-wide concrete boat ramp, which was installed on the upstream side of the current ramp to help accommodate river user traffic. In addition, the existing ramp was extended an additional 10 feet into the river.

This is one of a series of BLM recreation sites attached to this stretch of river, which include Island Bar, Lucile, Old Lucile, Shorts Bar, Slate Creek, Skookumchuck, White Bird, and Hammer Creek.

On the way to Pine Bar is the Weis Rockshelter, an archaeological site that was inhabited by Nez Perce people for more than 8,000 years.

How to get there: Head from Cottonwood on Graves Creek Road for approximately 11 miles. Camping is allowed only at designated numbered campsites, and a nightly fee is charged.
