Pause beside the Lochsa River for a peaceful and refreshing stroll through a shady grove of old-growth cedars.
Located eight miles west of Lolo Pass on U.S Highway 12 at milepost 167, DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove offers wheelchair-accessible paved paths that meander amid red cedars, some of which are up to 2,000 years old. Interpretive signs along the paths describe the life of the forest, identify other trees in the grove and call attention to points of interest, such as the extensive root system of a massive, upturned trunk.
DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove is part of the Clearwater National Forest. The area honors author and historian, Bernard DeVoto, whose works include, “The Journals of Lewis and Clark.” It is said that he spent time at the grove while he researched and wrote about the Lewis and Clark expedition.
